Anxiety and overthinking

Anxiety — including persistent worry or a sense of internal pressure — can show itself in many ways. For some it feels intrusive and exhausting; for others it sits more quietly in the background, shaping decisions, sleep, concentration or relationships.

It is common to want anxiety to go away. Yet anxiety is often a signal rather than something to eliminate. When it is met with curiosity and understanding instead of resistance, your relationship with it can change. When it is no longer fought against or avoided, its hold can loosen, allowing you to act with greater clarity, steadiness and choice

Depression and low mood

Anxiety and overthinking

Depression and low mood can feel heavy, draining and at times inescapable. For some, this brings a sense of disconnection — from themselves, from others, or from what once felt meaningful. It may follow a specific life event such as loss, illness, relationship strain or prolonged stress. At other times, it can emerge without a clear cause. In either case, these experiences warrant careful attention and understanding.

For some people, it can be helpful to begin by changing their relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings, gently loosening patterns of withdrawal or avoidance, and taking gradual steps towards living in ways that feel meaningful and aligned with what matters to them.

Relationships can be a source of connection and meaning, but they can also be where we feel most unsettled, misunderstood or stuck. Difficulties may arise around closeness, conflict, communication or unmet expectations.

Relationship challenges are often shaped by patterns developed over time, influenced by earlier experiences and coping strategies that once served a purpose. It can be helpful to notice how these patterns show up in thoughts, emotions and behaviour, and to consider how they may be affecting relationships in the present.

As awareness increases, it often becomes possible to respond differently — developing clearer boundaries and ways of relating that feel less reactive and more intentional.  The focus of this process is on understanding yourself more fully and developing ways of relating that feel healthier and more sustainable, rather than trying to change others.

Research shows how important it is for children and young people to feel safe, heard, and understood. Many young people experience anxiety, low mood, self-harm, stress, or relationship difficulties, and early support can help them better understand their feelings, feel less alone, and find ways to cope.

Taking time to listen calmly, without judgement or pressure, can make a meaningful difference, while young people can also help themselves by talking to someone they trust, expressing their feelings in creative or active ways, and remembering they do not have to manage everything alone.
